Chiptuning and the Dutch APK inspection

The Dutch APK is a periodic check of road safety, environmental requirements and registration. It is not a quality certificate for an ECU calibration and it does not make every modification automatically legal. Responsible tuning therefore starts with a healthy vehicle and functioning required systems.

What the APK checks

RDW describes the APK scope as road safety, environment and registration. This includes items such as brakes, tyres, lighting, exhaust emissions and the presence or operation of required emissions components.

Approval reflects the vehicle at the time of inspection. It is not a blanket legal assessment of every software or hardware change.

Does the inspection test the remap itself?

An inspector does not grade the quality of an ECU file. However, consequences of poor calibration can matter: warning lights, emissions, smoke, irregular running or non-functioning systems.

Passing APK therefore does not prove that a tune is technically optimal. Diagnostics, live data and logs answer different questions.

DPF, catalyst and emissions systems

RDW includes emissions and required components such as particulate filters and catalysts in the environmental inspection. Diesel vehicles with a required DPF are subject to the applicable particle test and the filter must function correctly.

NoordTune.nl starts emissions-system faults with diagnosis and fault analysis. Software options are discussed only where technically suitable and legally permitted for the specific vehicle, use and regulations.

Do not hide faults

Disabling a fault code without understanding the cause is not a responsible repair. Sensor faults, leaks or combustion problems can remain even when the warning appears to be gone.

Relevant protection and diagnostics should remain meaningful. Repair or legally resolve the fault first, then decide whether tuning is appropriate.

Prepare responsibly

Have warning lights, smoke, leaks and abnormal behaviour diagnosed before tuning. Hardware changes can affect emissions, noise, registration, insurance or permitted road use, so current rules must be checked for the individual case.

The Power Catalog is a technical indication only. An RDW-recognised inspection station determines the APK result under the rules that apply when the car is presented.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Will every tuned car pass APK?+

No one can guarantee that. The vehicle must meet the current safety, environmental and registration requirements when inspected.

Does APK approval mean every modification is legal?+

No. APK is a periodic inspection, not a blanket legal approval for every software or hardware modification.

Can tuning hide an emissions fault?+

It should not. The technical cause must be diagnosed and any solution must fit the vehicle and applicable law.
